#ChooseToChallenge: International Women’s Day 2021
One World Shop chooses to challenge. We choose to participate in International Women’s Day 2021. We choose to call out gender bias and gender inequality, to celebrate women’s achievements around the world, and to empower women locally and globally. We do this because it is the right thing to do, but also because it has repercussions throughout the community. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF):
Greater gender equality boosts economic growth and leads to better development outcomes. It contributes to reducing income inequality and boosting economic diversification and, in turn, supports economic resilience. Gender equality is one of the 17 global UN Sustainable Development Goals, which provide a roadmap for ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.1
Our work every day helps support gender equality by opening the North American market to artisans who are paid fairly for their products. Many of our artisans work in cooperatives and networks, giving them control over their work location, wages, and hours. In addition, the organizations provide access to further training, education on finances and health, and child care and schooling.
Check out Global Mamas, producers of batik textiles, beaded jewelry and ornaments, and shea butter skincare products. The organization of 350 women in Ghana has improved the lives, education and health of not only the women, but their families.
Prosperity Candles works in Iraq, Haiti, and Massachusetts to provide women with opportunities to improve their lives through candle-making. In Massachusetts, the women are refugees, who have left war-torn countries or systemic persecution to create a new life in the US.
These are just some of our partners working to empower women around the globe. We honor their work in choosing to challenge gender inequality in their communities, allowing women and their families to lead healthier, more secure, and more fulfilling lives.
